R0001 - 1915 Panama–California Exposition
This is a really fun photo taken of (left to right) Alma Ramsay (age 36), Mary Ramsay (40 years old), and James Dickie (age 59). The little cart they are riding on is known as an "Electriquette". Family lore has it that this James Dickie (possibly a banker) was a longtime (and unrequited) romantic admirer of Alma Ramsay (married woman with plenty of kids). The story has it that sister Mary Ramsay accompanied them as a chaperone to this 1915 event. While we don't know much about Dickie, a supposed banker, online gravestone records make it appears he was born in 1856 and was 59 at the age of this photo. We're not really 100% sure about him or why he is traveling with married women. You be the judge. Or if you know more information, let me know.
The Electriquette is a small electric wicker car, first used in 1915 at the San Diego-Panama Exposition. These were used by visitors to tour 1915 San Diego-Panama Expsoition. Although no original examples are known to exist, they have been recreated 100 years later and are now available for use if you want to tour Balboa Park in San Diego, the beautiful former grounds of the 1915 exposition.
As the San Diego National History Museum Facebook page says "When you visit Balboa Park, you channel your inner 1915 and ride an electriquette." Check it out here: https://www.facebook.com/Electriquettes/
In case you have never heard of it, Balboa Park is the big park in the middle of modern day downtown San Diego. The 1,400 acre park was actually placed in reserve in 1835, one of the first public parks of the United States. It was developed slowly thoughout the 1800s, but it is now famous for the incredible Spanish Colonial Revival style buildings, which were specifically developed for the 1915 Panama-California exposition. San Diego thought it would be a good idea to capitalize on the opening of the Panama Canal, since it was the first port a ship would stop at when heading northbound. The city developed these incredible buildings and park for the purpose of bringing attention and interest to the area.
